Orlistat is a prescription weight loss medication that helps people with a BMI over 30, or over 28 with weight-related conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes, lose weight. It works by preventing the absorption of some dietary fat, rather than burning existing fat or suppressing appetite.

Those with a BMI of over 30 or over 28 with existing weight-related conditions such as diabetes, blood pressure and heart problems. The orlistat 120mg is a prescription-only medicine, you will need to have an assessment to check your suitability before this medicine can be prescribed for you.

Yes, Orlistat is approved for weight loss in the UK.

While not everyone experiences side effects with Orlistat, some people may notice changes in their bowel habits, such as increased wind, oily spotting, or loose stools. These effects are generally mild and temporary, improving as your body gets used to the medication. Refer to the Patient Information Leaflet for the full list of side effects.

Take one orlistat capsule with water before, during, or up to an hour after each main meal that contains fat (maximum 3 capsules daily). Skip the capsule if you miss a meal or eat a fat-free meal.

Orlistat is the generic medicine name whereas Alli and Xenical are branded versions of Orlistat. The active ingredient, Orlistat, is the same in all three medicines.

Orlistat helps you lose weight by preventing your body from absorbing about a third of the fat you eat. It works by blocking the enzyme that breaks down fat so that fat passes out of your body as stools. Orlistat works if it is used with meals that contain fat.

You can find out more by reading the Patient Information Leaflet.

Find out more about Alli Capsules - Weight Loss Service

Alli® is the branded version of Orlistat, used for weight loss. You are required to complete an online consultation. Your suitability will be reviewed based on your BMI and past medical history.

Alli is an oral weight-loss capsule containing the active ingredient, Orlistat. Alli is indicated for weight loss in adults who are overweight (body mass index, BMI, ≥ 28 kg/m2) and should be taken in conjunction with a mildly hypocaloric, lower-fat diet.

If diet and exercise haven’t delivered the weight loss results you’re looking for, Alli® may be a suitable option. Alli® might be suitable for those with a BMI over 28.

Alli® is a weight loss aid that works by preventing your body from absorbing some of the fat you eat. It contains orlistat, which blocks enzymes responsible for breaking down fat in your digestive system. This means that about 25% of the fat you consume passes through your body undigested and is eliminated in your bowel movements.
Essentially, Alli® helps you reduce your calorie intake from fat, contributing to weight loss when combined with a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet and regular exercise.
It’s important to note that Alli® doesn’t block the absorption of calories from sugar and other non-fat foods, so maintaining a balanced diet and exercise is still crucial for effective weight loss.

While not everyone experiences side effects with Alli, some people may notice changes in their bowel habits, such as increased wind, oily spotting, or loose stools. These effects are generally mild and temporary, improving as your body gets used to the medication. Refer to the Patient Information Leaflet for more information.

Take one Alli® capsule with water before, during, or up to an hour after each meal (maximum 3 capsules daily). Skip a dose if you miss a meal or eat a fat-free meal. Remember to take a daily multivitamin at bedtime to support vitamin A, D, E, and K absorption.
See the patient information leaflet for details.
